How To Use Keyword Research Tools
In the last Hub - Keyword Strategies For Internet Newbies we discussed the basic steps in generating relevant keyword lists and gave a few recommendations as well as insight into keyword research and keyword analysis tools.
We also recommended the eBook - Keyword Profit Secrets Uncovered as a resource that provides a step-by-step tutorial of how to use Google's Adword Keyword Suggestion Tool in conjunction with Wordtracker to create profitable keyword lists that will get your website ranked high against your competition.
Now, we're going to move forward and look at a few more tools that can help you in generating keywords that will:
- Increase web site Search Engine Ranking
- Increase organic search engine traffic
- increase keyword profitability
If you haven't already done so, I suggest you take some time and experiment with the recommended tools. I want to stress that the more familiar you are with how they work, the easier it will be for you to generate massive keyword lists with terms your customers are looking for.
WordTracker Keyword Suggestion Tool - Wordtracker is a keyword suggestion tool that is available in both a free and paid (subscription) version.
WordTracker will provide you with a list of related keywords and the estimated search volume for each keyword. Data used by WordTracker is collected from two search engines, dogpile, com and metacrawler.com. Together these search engines account for approx. 3.5 million searches per day. This search engine volume provides WordTracker with enough measurable results to make them very reliable.
Note that WordTracker uses meta data information, as opposed to Google Adwords Keyword SuggestionTool which relies on search engine data from Google and all the ISP's that use Google as their search engine.
This accounts for the difference that is almost always seen when comparing keyword lists from WordTracker with those from Google.
The free version of WordTracker is limited to 100 results while the paid version will give you thousands of keywords which is useful when building keyword lists for PPC (Pay-Per-Click) campaigns such as AdWords or when searching for supplemental keywords to use when constructing your content pages for SEO purposes.
Another benefit of the paid program is that you can upload your own keyword lists and save your projects.
Google AdWords Keyword Tool - This is a free tool offered by Google that generates keywords based on a user entering descriptive words or phrases or a Web site URL.
An advantage to this tool is that it can display a measure of Advertiser Competition. In other words, it can show you the amount of advertisers bidding on each term within the Google Adwords Program.
This can greatly help you in finding new keywords to use in your own PPC campaign because the search volume appears right next to the advertiser competition.
Keywords with a fairly high search volume and low competition rating can make perfect addition to your own keyword lists. Remember my comment about Keyword Research being both ";art &; science."; The results predicted based on search volume and competition are only to be used as a rule of thumb.
Fee Based Programs
Compete.com- Compete.com allows you to see where your competition is generating search-engine traffic on both pay-per-click and organic searchs. Compete.com however does not gather data from search engines, but from Internet users who have installed the Compete.com toolbar. The service analyzes data not only on how users search but also how they behave on the sites they visit. The subscription fee starts at $199 per month for Intro program, which tends to make it prohibitive for new users.
You can test the service out for free by performing limited keyword analysis onsite.
Keyword Discovery is another fee based keyword research tool that you can use to generate large lists of head terms and tail terms for any topic you choose. They offer at least four databases: Global Premium Database, Historical Global Database, The Shopping Database and The eBay Database.
Each database measure different sets of metrics enabling the user to generate highly targeted keywords and keyword phrases. Standard subscription starts at $69.95 per month.
Now that you more indepth knowledge of what these keyword research and keyword analylsis tools will do, the next question is which one to use, and how to use it most effectively.
My suggestion is to try them all. Most fee based programs can be tested on a trial basis.
Begin to generate keyword lists and test them in the search engines. This is the only way that you'll learn how to use any of the tools with effectiveness.
The important points to remember are:
- Start by doing preliminary research on your niche. You can do this by perfoming a search in Google for your product, service or area of interest.
- Use one of the keyword analysis tools to determine which keywords, ";head"; keywords and ";tail"; keywords your competitors are using to rank and how they are ranked for individual keywords.
- Use a keyword research tool to create a large list of both ";head"; &; ";tail"; keywords. You want to create a blended list.
- Use the your keyword list to enrich your web page content and build the necessary keyword density to be recognized by the search engines.
- Analyze your own site regularly to find out where you're ranking for various keywords.
- Repeat the process.
The cliche might be somewhat over-used, but the truth is the winning at keyword generation is a journey and not a destination.
Only through constant tweaking can you maintain high search engine rankings as more and more websites are launched everyday in competition with yours.
